PLACE CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS AND SMOKE DETECTORS ON EACH FLOOR!

Fireplace and Wood Stove Safety Information:

  • Place a Carbon Monoxide Detector and Smoke Detector on each floor.

  • Have the Fireplace or Wood Stove cleaned yearly or every other year, depending on usage.

  • Make sure damper is open when in use to allow smoke to escape.

  • Keep ALL combustible items at least 36" away from Fireplace or Wood Stoves.

  • NEVER use gasoline or other volatile substance to start or freshen up a fire.

  • Do not burn anything except recommended wood in your Fireplace or Wood Stove.
  • Never leave a burning fire unattended!

  • Keep young children away from stoves and fireplaces.
  • How to choose wood: Quality, well-seasoned firewood helps keep your Wood Stove or Fireplace burning cleanly and efficiently. Green or wet wood can cause smoke and odor problems, as well as creosote buildup.

Oil Burner Safety Information:

  • Place a Carbon Monoxide Detector and Smoke Detector on each floor.

  • Have chimney inspected yearly. Oil Burner chimneys need to be inspected yearly because oil leaves soot.

  • Have the Oil Burner cleaned and services yearly before the heating season (which typically begins in September or October).

  • If installing a new system, have the chimney checked prior to installation.

How to Avoid a Chimney Fire

  • Only use Seasoned firewood
  • Build smaller, hotter fires that burn completely and produce less smoke
  • Never burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, trash, or Christmas Trees
  • Install Stovepipe thermometers to monitor flue temperatures, so you can adjust burning practices accordingly.
  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned on a regular basis. A clean chimney doesn't catch fire!
